The word chrome is short for Chromium, a naturally occurring element. The element is metal in nature but not useful in its state yet it is a pure substance. You cannot find a solid chrome man made chrome material. The term chrome plating refers to putting a thin layer of chrome on an object surface. Hard chrome plating suits applications in engineering tools and equipments where wear and tear is most common.

Nickel plating on the hand refers to electroplating nickel on the surface of an object and plating it with chrome. Sometimes it involves starting with copper electroplating before nickel. The advantage of nickel chrome plating is the smoothness, reflectivity, and corrosion resistance object when plated with nickel. The plating in nickel produces thin surfaces measuring millionths. A surface that has been chrome plated has side effects due to nickel plating. This generally prevents the nickel from being tarnished and prevents getting scratches in metal surfaces. The chrome reflective and decorative surface is enhanced by nickel undercoating.

There are always alternatives to chrome plating, which are easier and safe. Aluminum parts can be polished to look very good than when plated.
